🥇The Nugget: My Top Takeaway from This Week’s Conversation with Alexander McCobin
Wear Your Values on Your Sleeve 🔍
Having a distinctive investment thesis that explicitly communicates your values and principles does more than just define your focus—it creates a natural filtering mechanism. By being radically transparent about what you stand for, you naturally attract aligned founders while repelling mismatches, saving everyone time and creating stronger partnerships.
From Alexander: "Wearing our values on our sleeves is important. Because what we found is that when we talk about liberty and the principles of capitalism, there are some people who get really excited about that... and others we found that are turned off by this."
Takeaway: The clearer your investment thesis and values, the more efficient you are at building a focused network/community. So, for those of us with explicit focus areas, a few lessons:
Make the strategic orientation/focus explicit in all communications
Use values as a pre-screening mechanism to enhance alignment with portfolio companies, coinvestors, etc
Build the entire support ecosystem (events, network introductions, advisors) around shared principles to maximize natural value-exchange beyond capital
For those of us who are still figuring out where the “bulls-eye” sits… Well, keep dialing it in 🙂
